July: Summer Adventures in Wonderland

Slowing Down, Featured

You may know July 4th as Independence Day, but did you also know that July 4, 1862 is known to many as Alice in Wonderland Day? It is the day that commemorates Lewis Carroll’s first telling of the famous children’s story to a young child, Alice Liddell.  Yes, on this day Lewis Carroll sent Alice down a rabbit hole in his popular, loveable and nutty tale, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.  The Morgan Library & Museum’s current exhibition is Alice: 150 Years of Wonderland about Lewis Carroll’s classic story is now running in New York City. It’s a big month of Alice celebrations.

I will go to The Morgan Library & Museum this week to celebrate and will report back. Meanwhile, enjoy!  Make some great photographs!

A Boat Beneath a Sunny Sky (or, when Alice first heard the tale…)

BY LEWIS CARROLL

BOAT beneath a sunny sky, Lingering onward dreamily, In an evening of July —

Children three that nestle near, Eager eye and willing ear, Pleased a simple tale to hear —

Long has paled that sunny sky: Echoes fade and memories die: Autumn frosts have slain July.

Still she haunts me, phantomwise, Alice moving under skies, Never seen by waking eyes.

Children yet, the tale to hear, Eager eye and willing ear, Lovingly shall nestle near.

In a Wonderland they lie, Dreaming as the days go by,

Dreaming as the summers die: Ever drifting down the stream —

Lingering in the golden gleam — Life, what is it but a dream?
